Sons of Town Hall Jacksonville Concert reviews
Charming from Beginning to End
I bought tickets for one reason only: to see a Beatle, as more than a typical Beatlemaniac (I've certainly made my pilgrimage to Liverpool). There he was: Ringo Starr - same puppy dog eyes, same drawling Liverpudlian accent, and same charisma that defined them as a group; except, the group had changed. I had initial questions about the programming; would I know his later works? Would he perform Beatles classics? Would he even play the drums? From the moment he stepped on stage (of course, everyone pops up to their feet to welcome him like royalty) I was absolutely charmed and instantly relieved of any questions. The Ringo standards were there, and let me tell you, when they struck the first chord of "Yellow Submarine", everyone became unglued... but there were some fun songs added to the mix, thanks to Sons of Town Hall - mostly great 70s and 80s hits, i.e. Mr. Mister, Toto, Santana. These only added to the fun! The lead singer from Mr. Mister still has his beautiful voice, and performed "Kyrie" and "These Broken Wings" flawlessly and powerfully.
If you close your eyes through "Boys" or "Don't Pass Me By", you can easily imagine John, Paul, and George in attendance; but if your imagination is a little stinted, you can at least appreciate all of the amazing things seen and done by this man, which is fulfilling enough. Overall, you walk away from the experience on a great high (with a little help from your friends). The image of him sitting at his drum set, singing along (although the head bobbing has calmed down significantly), is one I will never forget.
